You Are Not So Smart – Blog Review

May 20th, 2011

rate4 You Are Not So Smart Blog ReviewYou Are Not So Smart is a blog by  journalist David McRaney, who also “loves psychology, technology and the internet.” Its area of focus is dedicated to showing us how we are not actually the rational, logical beings we like to think we are.

You Are Not So Smart Blog ReviewWritten in plain English and free from unnecessary technical terminology, You Are Not So Smart manages to make pretty complex, high level decision making theories and the idea of cognitive biases easily understood by the average Joe. His journalistic background means the writing is of an exceptionally high quality and filled with pithy statements that stick in your mind long after you’ve clicked back to Youtube. McRaney also manages to make his potentially dry subject matter highly entertaining by peppering his posts with modern-day, contextual examples that just about anyone can relate to – ranging from Farmville to Halloween costumes – to illustrate the points he is making.

In one of his latest posts, The Sunk Cost Fallacy, McRaney uses the popularity of Facebook games like Farmville to explain why humans experience loss more acutely than gain, and manages to do this in a highly engaging manner without trivializing the subject matter. By the end of the post, readers have a clear idea of why they inevitably are compelled to “throw good money after bad” – a concept that frequent gamblers would gain much from grasping.

Other brilliant posts include Confirmation Bias, which posits that your opinions are not the result of rational, objective analysis but rather “the result of years of paying attention to information which confirmed what you believed while ignoring information which challenged your preconceived notions.” And Deindividuation, which suggests that under the right conditions, people are prone to losing their individuality and behave in a manner they otherwise would not.

A really easy, enjoyable read that won’t make your brain hurt, but will certainly make you smarter.  Without a doubt, this blog deserves a 4.3/5; considering it’s a great read, hopefully the activity and posting frequency increases.

Parents of an Addict – Blog Review

October 21st, 2009

rate4 Parents of an Addict Blog ReviewThere are plenty of parenting blogs floating around on the
internet, but few have as touchy a subject as “An Addict in Our Son’s Bedroom.” Started in January 2009, An Addict in our Son’s Bedroom aims to chronicle the lives of two parents trying to help out their son – a drug addict. While the blog focuses on the parents’ struggle to raise their troubled child, there are also posts centered around their own lives and activities, painting a picture of their personalities and what they do when parenting is not the primary focus. These posts often lend a happy tone to an otherwise somber blog about personal development.

dm1 Parents of an Addict Blog ReviewThe content  of the blog draws you in right from the interesting and mysterious titles and keeps you enthralled till the very last word. There is a lot of emotional weight in each post, and you can honestly connect with the authors. Subtle usage of paragraph breaks, bold and italic font, and varying sentence structure make this blog a really great read. Every post has some lesson or deep feeling to share, and every post is completely engaging.

The blog has a lightweight, innocent looking blue blogger theme, with text that makes it extremely easy to read. There aren’t a lot of frills aside from the sidebar widgets, which can feel a little crowded. Once you make your way past the widgets, you find links to popular posts, useful links, an archive, a blog roll, and, all the way at the bottom, some about information.

This blog gets a 4/5 for having compelling content that really draws the readers into the bloggers’ lives. The design enhances the content and makes it easier to read, and the overall presentation is spectacular. If you want to read something well-written that connects with its audience, you have to check out An Addict in Our Son’s Bedroom.
