A while back, Seth Godin wrote a post about the difference between rock stars and opening acts. The general premise is that depending on who you're in front of you're either going to be largely ignored or heaped with praise. I want to know what type of stuff you guys have been doing to get a loyal following, not just casual readers. Go!

Honestly, I'd say it's 90% content, and for me, the other 10% has been using twitter effectively. But I'd be curious what you define as a "rockstar". Success to one person isn't the same thing to the next and rockstar is a pretty big word. 300 uniques consistently a day? 400? 700? Many blogs struggle to get 100 uniques a day.

Hmmm...it's interesting you bring that up, because I guess what I really had was a two part question. The second question being what is a good ratio between new and returning visitors. You obviously want both, but if you consistently have 95% new vs. 5% returning you probably aren't gaining a sizeable readership (unless we're talking huge amounts of traffic). "Rockstar" status is definitely relative; I just started my latest blog about a month ago and the most traffiic I've had in one day was about 100 uniques due to an odd Stumbleupon surge (I'll have to post more on that later). I think the best metric is in the above referenced ratio: I'm thinking somewhere around 60/40, but that's completely arbitrary. I like what you said in terms of content: it's definitely king. Twitter? I've got a love/hate relationship with it. Maybe you can offer some pointers... |
