Default Finding hot news for your niche, fast (and taking advantage of it)?

Curious what you guys to to take advantage of news hot off the press (or even before the press write about it) (without constantly watching the news, browsing social bookmarking sites, etc).

I've had a lot of success writing around hot topics but some times minutes can make a huge difference in whether your blog post gets picked up first or some other guy's.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

Depends on the niche really, not to mention your keyword structure in relation to your blog and content thereof. My suggestion on getting ahead of the starting line on breaking news, would be to Ping the various RSS feed suppliers so the various SE's can index your news sooner than later....IMO

EG

I use Google Alerts. You can enter in what topic you are interested in. And then set it so you get the latest alerts when the topic you are interested in is being talked about.

It's great tool to staying up to date with a lot of things.

Why not tune into a local news station on the radio and when something breaks, pounce on it for local traffic online. There must be some way to monetize local traffic over global.

I haven't yet used any news sources in my blog (its brand new), but I wonder where to to draw the line before your site becomes a news stie rather than whatever your personal blog is for

Nobody competes for articles in my niche, so I just keep an eye on an RSS about once a week. I bet there's some really good Firefox apps out for that, though, that notify you on certain keywords.

I will definitely take a look at this.

I want to make the most out of my blog and a topical news story or two would definitely give it some more character
