I really think that the length of a blog post depends on the topic. I don't want or need to read a ~1000 words of bash or flaming (especially since I don't like either in the first place) and I also do not need to read ~2000 words on how your cat pooped this morning. I would freely read that amount of words if someone needed that much to explain a personal problem or to essay a topic that is of interest to me. Therefore I would absolutely read a 1000-2000 long discussion about gay rights and homophobia. I don't think that Reviews should be too long but I cannot give you an amount of words that I would see fit for that kind of category and only chose to use specific numbers before to give you an idea of what I would think read-worthy and what not and why I gladly would sometimes read loooooong articles. Of course it is easier on the eye and mind to have shorter articles and it allows the reader to think about what has been 'said' before going into the next part but on the other hand I'd have to say that the writer doesn't really gain anything by dividing their topic into several entries because - in my opinion - a lot of people start losing interest if they cannot read all about it in one go. PS: If your Blog is all about health and care of cats, you can totally get away with a thousand words about your cat's poop PPS: Yes, I posted this comment in the other "how long should a blog post be" topic but since it seems to be dead, I came here. |

This is something I've battled with back and forth for some time now. When I first created my blog, I thought it would best to showcase my imagery, rather than writing, but in recent weeks, have decided that perhaps expanding my horizons and offering a bit more than just images would be the best way to go. I haven't heard back from a lot of people on which approach to take, but I feel confident that my method of concentrating more on writing than imagery will be successful. That said, I feel that word count shouldn't be a problem, just as long my point has been expressed respectively and nothing lacks any detail. Chase |

Generally on my blog I keep my posts from around 350 words to 650 words maximum and I believe that this is good enough for a blog post.Well you don't want a post to be too long unless you're writing after a long time.

Tell you something funny. I don't read long ones, I don't have the attention span. That said... I write super long ones... Who knows really?

I didn't read all 10 pages but this is just my opinion on it: I think posts should be as long as they need to be to convey the message, provide all necessary information, or fulfill their purpose. If you have a very complex idea or opinion and you write a long post, then people who appreciate the complexity won't mind reading it. Really it depends on your audience. If you're blogging about online Flash games, you shouldn't write a 1000 word post summarizing the game. But if you're reviewing a new console game, people find this information useful so they want as much detail as possible. Regardless, people don't like walls of text (sure you've read that) so use some pictures, cartoons, videos, or other media to supplement your post. If anyone's argument is that a long post is boring, I think it's more the writer and not the words that make it boring. If you're a boring writer, your short posts and long posts will both be boring. You've read a novel, haven't you? There are some you hated and some you loved, but both were probably the same length. It's just the writer and story. If you don't like the writer's style or you don't connect with the story's genre, you won't like it.

Personally I think it depends on the person. Everyone has there own style of writing. Some write longer posts, others shorter. The real question in my mind is what works best for your own style? You can always find people who prefer to read either. I mean, you can find both preferences just here in this thread. |
