| That's a great comparison actually. You might strike up a conversation on the buss about a local restaurant or something silly your kids did, but you're not going to pass out your address, phone number, social security number, etc, right off the bat.

the great thing about a personal blog is that you can place anything on it! if you talk about current news, sports and anything of interest would be great! but just make sure you place your personality on anything you write

Precisely. When you start a blog, you are throwing your life and information out to the world, and you don't know what kind of people are reading it. Keep it simple, don't use names. I'm not about to divulge private information to someone that I just met. Just be careful, and double check your work. We don't want anything bad to happen to you.

I wouldn't use kid or spouse names-- you could give them cute nicknames though so you aren't just saying "my son" or "my wife." I wouldn't say where you live but I think giving a city is fine. Other than that, I agree not to say specific places like Starbucks, etc. unless it's part of the story (like a cust service story). |

Privacy as we know it is slowly being eliminated. I just heard about technology being developed that can read your face, from a picture, and show you all the information about the person from their facebook, linkedin, etc... Keep in mind, as it's getting much easier to find information about people, it's also becoming much harder to commit crimes. There are eyes everywhere. Post whatever you feel comfortable posting. Chances are if someone really wanted to find out where you life and other personal information...they can anyways. Hope that makes you feel better =P

I actually run a personal blog and have done safely for about 4 years now. Some of the things I do are: I dont use place names, such as my emplayer is known as "my place of Employment" I dont name my children and have never posted any pictures of them, they did not ask for their Dad to be a blogger. If I am talking about a person I give them a made up name unless they are in the public eye or have given me permission to use their name. I have a friend who runs a personal blog and has done for nearly ten years now and has only ever had one person find him, he took the guy out for a beer and write a post about it, I dont think he has ever seen the guy again. Another tip would be to create an email address for your blog, if you have your own domain Google can set you up with your own domain email address such as mail@yourdomain.com. If you think about what your posting about and what your saying you will be quite safe |
