Announcement to Bloggeries Members: Please Report Fake Signatures as Spam

Dear Bloggeries Members,

Recently we have been getting a lot of fake signature spam. You may have already seen the forum global announcement about this, but just in case I am also posting this thread.

First of all, what does fake signature spam look like? Here is an example:

At first glance it looks like this post has a normal signature, but if you look closer you will see that there is no line above the signature. This is because the poster just put two links in his post rather than using the built-in signature feature.

Here is another classic example:

This type of fake signature spam hurts our forum's reputation in the Google search engine, and it looks ugly.

If you are doing this please stop. In the future we will begin issuing temporary bans for fake signature posting, permanent bans for repeated offense. If you see that someone has posted a fake signature please report it as spam by clicking the red triangle in the upper right of the post.

To Moderators:

Some people add a line above their fake signature to make it look like a real signature, but if you click the edit button on their post you will see something like this:

This is also fake signature spam.

Moderators, please begin issuing temporary bans for comment spamming. We will begin with two day bans for this type of spam. Also, if you give someone a temporary ban please add a user note to their profile under the moderator section so that we can tell they have spammed in the past, and give them a permanent ban next time.

If this attempt does not stop things then we will have to begin permanent bans for fake signature spam.

We want to Bloggeries to maintain its Google PR, and its reputation as a useful place to learn about blogging. Please assist us in the effort by reporting fake comment spam to the moderators using the red triangle at the top right of forum posts.

That is an idea. A lot of the time spammers will still use humans to solve captchas for them, or use a man-in-the-middle attack against captchas. A classic ploy is for a spammer to set up a porn site where to view porn people have to answer a captcha. Well, the owners of the porn site use those human solved captcha to answer captcha so they can register spam bots.

Spam bots and porn sites work great together and they effectively render captchas useless.
