How to make a directory out of your blog

I have a few ideas for new blogs with this nice aged domain(10yrs old) and the new wordpress network feature.
One of them is making an article or link directory out of wordpress. I'd like to have paid options as well as free/regular options.
I did a quick search for directory plugins, but wanted to come here and see what the pro's would use.
Has anyone else made a directory out of a wordpress install? Do you have any tips for me?

Never done it but I think it would be a great idea.

Especially if it had some social components. I have a 13 year old one I should do something with. Project~!?

I have no doubt I'll be able to integrate it with social sites, but just not sure where to start with the directory mods.

ps.. it seems the mods just make use of the wp categories, but better
