When I get a pingback for an article in Wordpress, it shows up as a comment with part of the description from my article. Should I delete these? |

It depends. Goto the link and see if the pinging site has a link to your article. If not delete it. I only accept pingbacks if they blog pinging me has a link to me as well. The reason they show up as comments is probably because your themes displays them that way. |

A pingback happens when another blogger writes a post and includes a link to your post in their post. When they publish their post you’ll normally receive an email notification letting you know they have referenced (i.e. linked to) your post. The email notification commonly includes an extract from the post they’ve written, a link to their post and a link to the post you had written. Once you’ve approved the pingback it’s displayed in the comments on your post with just the extract of post showing enclosed in brackets like these [...]. This is so other readers can follow the link and read the post on the other persons blog if they are interested. |

Askimet always shows a certain site which pings me as SPAM so I just leave it as spam.

Yes, definitely make sure the pingback is from a legitimate site that is linking to your article. Some sites just copy a portion of your article and link to it just to generate links back from your site. Akismet plugin for spam in WordPress does a pretty good job of not allowing those through, although it does pick up a few legitimate pingbacks.

I still get confused by pingbacks, but the ones that I'm getting are not spam. They are other well-established blogs producing content that references me ("coffee cup news" "daily shot of coffee" and "brand autopsy" and a few others). So far, I've been approving ping backs that come from (1) well-established blogs within the (2) exact same niche. What are others doing? Do others here just simply delete all pingbacks?

Additionally, this is the reason it's good to make sure pingbacks aren't spam, because you don't want to have an outbound link to a spam site on your blog that someone might click on.
