In my opinion, content is core of any blog and platform is just a medium for it. Of course, choice of platforms is important but its not bad to use Blogger. Blogger is not as feature rich as other platforms like WordPress. Being a hosted WordPress user, I don't like Blogger much because of many small problems!

As said above, the platform doesn't matter much. Focus on getting your site indexed by search engines (there are plenty of threads on this).

I use blogger, as do a pretty good collection of other professional sites. It isn't a "bad" choice. However, Wordpress can be better if you want to self-host and want more flexibility on the server side with PHP scripts, etc.

If you don't have any money to invest, it's a great start but for me, I'll buy the domain before even writing up any content

I love Blogger as a platform, but what matters is what you 'do' with it. Looking at my site, you can't even immediately tell that I use Blogger. Using .blogspot addresses instead of your own domain can sometimes lower your credibility or potential to make money, etc, but you can do whatever you want with your site to customize it and make it your own. And with great content? That's all that matters.

Yeah, the main problem with most Blogger users is that they don't customize their sites enough. There are plenty of professional themes and addons for Blogger. You just have to spend the time to install them and get them working.

I have done massive html/java scripting to alter my blogger blogs, and visitors have asked me how I did so; Many people have contacted me for link exchange/offering to write, etc, for essentially a basic platform blog. I think many blogger based tutorials which I learnt from, have made it to some extent - judging by their high page rank/comments. I read somewhere that make money online for beginners by Grizz (a blogger blog) makes serious money daily...
