To get followers many people choose spammy techniques: opening an account of some popular user and following many users he follows. But this is very visible so my recommendation is to first add the people you already know - post the "follow me on twitter" widget to your blog and profiles on MySpace and Facebook, search for the people you actually know and follow them. And of course it is not forbidden to follow people that encourage you to do so - like when you read a blog you find interesting and see a Twitter username of the author, it is always a good idea to follow this blogger as you will both have something to discuss already.

And it is wise to keep in mind that Twitter is about conversation and you should really try to engage with the community to get noticed. I promise, eventually you will find yourself totally absorbed in Twitter

TwitterFeed seems to work well. My first post was posted to twitter lastnight automatically. Ah, one less thing to do myself

An important advantage is that you can actually feed TwitterFeed with whatever you want to share with your readers - your new YouTube videos, Flickr photos, bookmarks on del.icio.us or StumbleUpon. It really makes filling your twitter stream with some initial content easier. Though when you actually get to understand how Twitter works and what you want to share with your followers, you may need this automatic content less and less - in fact, I have finally removed everything but the blog feed only - all the other tweets from me are regular "human" messages.

Twitter feed is cool but I'd be leary of "overdoing it" sharing some stuff is cool but if you share everything you do without sharing other just "cool stuff" you find people may stop following.

Guess it depends; If you're problogger most are subscribed to him to get info from him. If you're just going on chatting etc some people may get annoyed. Just my $0.02

I agree. I know my posts aren't that great I was just passing some things along I guess. I don't want to spam twitter either, but it would be nice to know if my followers actually get value from me.

I hear ya I have some people on my list that are nice but wow they will push an article from a rather new blog every 3 hours or just make catch statements then link to it.

First everyone should use it how they feel but personally I think if you are going to send out links you should spread the love; link to cool stuff people you know have done which helps your followers and your friends. It's what social media is all about; the more you give the more you'll get from the strangest places it's like a social media karma system or something.

I'd like to keep the stuff I tweet about myself less than 25% of link related tweetage.

Very true - this is why I finally removed all my social bookmarking activities from my Twitter stream and now I only stick to posts from my blog, my own messages sent to my followers, discussions with people I follow, and some cool finds that I want to send some Twitter love to.

But whatever you choose to do on Twitter, the best part is that the community will decide for itself: eventually you will see that if you do not post anything interesting and only use Twitter for self-promotion, people will just stop following you or will stop paying attention which is not better.

Twitter has some great marketing potential, hence why everyone is starting to get on the bang wagon. Unfortunately the "follow bots" are appearing and I would suggest you simple don't just refollow anyone that follows you but look at their contributions and index scores...ie. following 25k and 2 followers will represent no value.

Treat it like a conversation you would in real life, use it to develop a branding of yourself and our business not simply a post after post of blog links and it will return dividends. I am seeing some great results in terms of traffic and my twitter stats are only low....take a look at Twitter / MikeRalph

Great advice about not posting too much. It's more about an ongoing conversation with some obvious links but unless you're a major news network or something you shouldn't just throw everything through. People will ignore it than start ignoring you most likely.

There are numerous types of twitter users. 25,000 following and 2 followers is a flag but if someone is following a few thousand with 1000 followers it's still alright for me; some people are more ambitious and more social; different strokes different folks but don't just follow anyone blindly if they seem interesting follow them; if they spam you de follow them.

Welcome to the forum Mike,
