I really think everyone whining about the "new system" weren't using it quite as well as they thought they were before.
The biggest complaint is that the prices are all screwed up now, right? Lets say you were getting 100 drops every day (above most peoples range). That means you were getting 50 ec a day from ads on your site. Great. You could probably get a line of 4-5 at a time, thats not hard to hold on to.
The new method bases the price of an ad spot on how many are in the line. Look at it reasonably. It changes it from a system based on chain droppers for your pricing, to being reliant on advertisers to set the prices. If your prices dropped it means you weren't worth as much as you thought you were. Yes, it took a few days for prices to equalize, and the day after the changes prices were very screwed up. But since then they've been mostly reasonable, and seem set more or less on prices in a similar range.
With the new overlay you can see the price of the spot and the traffic it gets at the same time. Over dropping 600 cards the past couple days, I haven't noticed many that were much off from 2*popularity. Those that were, the site was either amazing (and the price was higher), or the site sucked, and prices were lower. It seems so stupid to hear people complaining about their prices dropping. That means you aren't quite as good at what you do as you thought. Boo-hoo, you'll have to treat it as an actual ad-spot, rather than just free traffic.

More on the original topic, I've found a couple of things help with converting EC traffic. The biggest thing has been my contest (in my signature). Make sure the site is small and loads quickly, and make sure the landing page for EC has a picture on it. Use lots of Buzzwords, and other such stuff to catch their attention quickly, and you're able to turn chain droppers into readers fairly easily.
