I just wanted to share that I've had some success with StumbleUpon for promoting my blog. I'd put a few of my posts into StumbleUpon, the ones I felt were good entry points for new readers, but didn't see much activity. Then, after putting in a few new ones, I saw traffic from StumbleUpon rise, going from just 1 to 2 a day to over 75 in one day. Out of the 75 visitors, 2 subscribed to the blog. This is not targeted traffic (unless you use a detailed category when you stumble the page), but it's free traffic, so it's worth doing for the one or two people who will find what they're looking for at your blog. That matches how I use StumbleUpon, quick visits but rarely going back. As a new blog, I figure it's worth getting a few new subscribers. I wonder if anyone has ever studied what the critical mass of blog subscribers is before a blog takes off? There seems to be a point at which the subscribers generate enough buzz about the blog to keep it growing. By the way, kudos on Self Made Minds. That's one of the blogs that's doing just about exactly what I had envisioned for Online Opportunity. Providing useful information to help newcomers (although I'm quite a bit closer to the newbie stage than you all!) Jay |

If you are looking to increase the number of Stumbles that your site recieves you may want to try StumbleXchange. It is a service that allos you to showcase your site to be Stumbled. The more sites you Stumble the more yours will be shown to others. These type of sites have the potential for abuse, but I recommend that you only Stumble sites that you feel are worthy. This way the site can thrive and not run the risk of being banned.

Thanks Jay, I expect your right and there is a critical mass, probably changes between genres but I haven't heard of anything specific as regards numbers. I guess it depends on whether by taking of you mean turn a profit if that is the intention or just grow without any further promotion. |

I meant growing without further promotion, due to the buzz generated by existing subscribers. Jay |

It's been a few months since StumbleUpon was really talked about all the time. Do you still get traffic from them (residual)? If not are you still stumbling new work and actively using it? I used it for a few months but after minimal to nil conversion through genuine stumbles and paid ~$30-40 over a month through the site have since stopped using it. Still using stumble upon actively?

I still get the Stumble spike from old stumbles now and then, but the traffic never amounts to much in the way of new readers. Jay |

Although social media sites tend to give only spikes of traffic, the presence you get from it is very useful and free. If the rest of your content is good you will get more subscribers and more people checking back via bookmarks. Social media all the way!

I've been stumbling all my recent posts for Home Business Blog how to make money from home and small businesses and its one of the larger traffic sources at the moment. I'm interested to see what happens. I think some types of things are better to the "stumble crowd" than others.
