Hmmm. Higher bounce rate, but you are gaining incoming links from SU which is an 'authority site'. If the bounce rate does effect serp rankings, then the question is whether or not that negative effect is greater or less then the incoming link's effect.

I use stumble upon but not to link directly to my sight but rather to articles or blog posts that I have created separately from my site. We all know that social bookmarking helps with getting pages indexed and cached faster and SU works great for these purposes.

I'm not saying people shouldn't use it, I'm just saying on low traffic blogs, it might have some effect.

I still use it quite frequently, but I make sure it's a page that already has traffic going to it. I was just trying to spur some thoughts about it.

I seriously doubt that bounce rate has any effect on search engine rankings. Sometimes the best sites out there have the highest bounce rates. Take for example Google's own site. If they do their job right, and deliver high quality results, then their bounce rate is going to be through the roof. Doesn't mean their site is poor quality, or anything like that.

From my experience, traffic to my site has only increased from Stumbleupon. Not just visitors from stumbles, but RSS subscribers have increased, Twitter followers have increased, and backlinks have increased as well, as stumblers share my site on their own blogs, which in turn increases my SERPs. Plus, if you consider that another factor that Google considers for their rankings is traffic, then that more than balances out any negative effect from bounce rate.

Bottom line, don't worry about it and embrace social media sites
