because blogs are not eCommerce sites where you can calculate a cost of visitor to your sales margin, you need as much free visitors as you can. Search Engines are the best way to get those.

The idea of blogging is just the same when creating a domain. Blog pages face all the same requirements to rank well with search engines as any other web pages. Always remember that blogs are simply made up of ordinary web pages. When Google or any other search engine indexes pages in a blog, the pages are not seen as special, blog-like or treated in a way different than how any ordinary web page is analyzed.

well search engines are only important if you want strange people to visit your blog. Other wise they aren't important. ( you can also attract a lot of visitors trough twitter search)

If you want people to be able to find your blog, it should come up under relevent keywords in search engines. So, if you search for eating healthy, if your blog was eatinghealthy dot com you'd want to to come up in the search results.

I have to agree with what most others are already saying. Search engines are great for blogs because it can get a wide audience who doesn't already know about a blog and feed them towards a blog. Once they get to the blog they might discover that they really love the blog and want to be repeat daily visitors, while other may only have been looking for than one obscure post and have that be that.

The higher you rank within a search engine's index, the better and the more likely that someone will find your blog's link. (Being on the top of the first page of search results is much better than the bottom of the tenth page results)

At the end of the day, web traffic and web sales is all about numbers. With the higher the number being the greater type of ads and ad revenue that is available to a blog.

Search engines provide FOC traffic. That's why they are important to me. However, there are many successful blogs which weren't submitted to SE's but the SE's found them and rate them well.
