I will start off by telling mine.

Submitting to many directories, sites etc. works, but I look for the home page of high ranking blogs and comment with my links in them. If the comment gets accepted I get more than 20 links per comment sometimes. For my new website, FreeTrafficVolcano, I commented on 2-3 blogs and got 70 links to my website when I checked it just 2 days after I created the website. I think that is not too bad.

I think what is meant by that that if the blog has got the Top Commentator Plugin and DoFollow enabled. Depending on how many comments you leave and how many will get accepted, there is a good chance you will appear in the Top Commentator widget, and as this appears on every page of the blog, you get as many backlinks as the blog has pages (or posts). I totally agree with your statement on content, its the flesh to your website and you decide how healthy it looks. But i try to get backlinks personally so i can let people see what i have to say, for me theres a great personal satisfaction in seeing my hits go up and know that more people have taken an interest in my views
