| Google are seriously worried for the first time they are facing competition with the money to put up a real fight what most people don't realize is that both MSN and Yahoo were portals that tried to keep visitors on their site, and not send them off to somebody else like Google always has done Bing and Yahoo already have the combined user base to generate more search volume than Google - they just have to re-educate their existing users to double their searches - and I think that is doable Google makes 97 percent of their income from search - they are very vulnerable now the best does not always win long term - Betamax video recorders were actually better than VHS - but VHS killed off Betamax |

Perhaps that's why Google is trying to broaden its scope with mobile operating systems, browsers, etc.

I have confidence in the vast brainpower within the walls of the Googleplex. I believe they have the greatest minds of all the search providers and that we will see new non-search products from Google in the future.

The people they've got are not the people to create non-search products They do however currently have the money to buy out existing market leaders - but we've all seen the disasters that occur when cash rich companies try and diversify I'm glad I'm not a google shareholder |

yes, they've got to It's said that google moving into microsoft's browser and operating system markets triggered msn's hostile response and current attack on google's search market share - they were resigned to being third best before that |

Interestingly Google is already planning to come out with a new search engine, behind the covers. We won't see much changes while searching, but we may see changes in search visitors to our blogs. The new system is called Caffeine. Some news about it: Google Caffeine: A Detailed Test of the New Google Try it out yourself. ![]() Basically it seems like Caffeine is Googles response to Bing, in an effort to make sure it stays in the lead.

no, I was meaning Google could move into new markets such as cell phones, satellite channels, etc. by simply buying existing enterprises, rather than try and build from scratch - what sort of business would a bunch of Phd's create anyway? |

I read on search engine land (and/or journal), that Bing has way less than half the search market share of Google search. So a long way to catch up. But because millions of people are signed up with Google functions - Adsense, Gmail, Adwords, Analytics, Docs, Web Master Tools, Maps, Apps, etc. Hence it might be difficult for those users to not use Google search engine - even though I think the Google search bar is not directly included in any of those functions.
