I know there are a lot of backgrounds out there for blogger... I don't know about other sites, though. Try Googling for some free ones? I don't know... I got mine from a Google search.

It has taken me awhile to find one I like, so I know what your going through. The one I have now is a basic one, but I can tolerate it until I find something that really strikes my fancy.

I'm digging the purple. Having your links the same color though is a bit too much in my opinion. Maybe a blue would look good? I don't know, I'm not really a designer specialist, haha, I'm just trying to offer an opinion.
