Hi. I run It's a Geek. It's a Girl. It's a Blog. I'm changing the template and I'm working on it on a test website in order to build it up. Here's the test: Lillian - Testing Web Templates I'm testing out color combos (forget how it looks now, I know it's terrible. ) and I happen to like the colors from this image:http://th04.deviantart.net/fs28/300W...r_assassin.jpgHowever, I'm having a hard time trying to pick out the exact colors, and how to use them. I'd like to have the background dark, the text light and with pink highlights. If you focus on the right hand side, the top few sections, the Twitter and Search, etc. Those are close to what I'm looking for. I could use a recommended design color to add to it. I was thinking of putting in a lighter gray boarder or using the lighter gray around the title of the tool... Not 100% sure yet. Any thoughts on getting color combination right? |

First off, I just want to say good work on the blog. I'm impressed. It looks like you're posting about topics that you're sincerely interested in, and you've got years of an archive! I hope that I haven't given up in 3 years time! Wow! You have ads but you've managed to place them in a non-intrusive way in relationship to the content. I'm no blog expert (my blog is 7 months old- hope you'll visit it too. Here's the thread on it - http://www.bloggeries.com/forum/show...ike-about.html) but I can see why you might want to add a lighter color border. Maybe a light grey edge around each blog post. I also really like your side column with the archive, subscribe, tags, and recent comments - It's very clean and easy to see what is going on. Super blog!

My personal opinion after viewing hundreds of blogs one after the other is white or light backgrounds with black or dark text have a much greater instant impact and are easier to read, which invites me to spend more time there. I have read this in reports for years and tend to agree.

But, if you're only concerned about getting your word out there in your own way, then having dark background with light text can be very effective, you can "brand" yourself in a sense. Your layout is great, especially the social buttons in the top right; and honestly I think that the color scheme you have right now is great. The only complaint I have is that your theme makes the site feel a little "boxy" (especially the tabs at the top). Regardless, great job on your site, and I think that what you have right now works really well so why change it?

Thanks all. I'm working on it further. I agree with the 'boxy' comment. The top is really boxy right now. I'm actually working with a designer on a new logo, and hope to have something that will create a more smooth style that I love. |

I think you should make the main wrapper background white. I understand wanting to get that color scheme going, but it's easiest for readers to view text on a white (or close to white) background. The inverse puts a slight strain on the eyes. I also think fewer variations of grays will help relieve the "boxy" feeling of your website.
