Default Encoding video for podcasting?

Do you have a preferred way of encoding video for podcasting?

I'm using Windows XP or Vista with plenty of ram for what it's worth.

Thanks,

I know I'm way late for this, but if you're looking to do it for free you can use Windows Media Encoder. Its not great, but it works well enough for most uses. It has some trouble doing certain formats, and its mostly trial and error, but some practice and it gets pretty simple to use.

Another program I've heard good things about for video editing is Sony Vegas. Not sure how good it is myself, I've never used it, but from what I've been told its one of the best.

I have a Mac, and am not very interested in podcasting, maybe I don't know enough about it.

To be honest, I know this is an old post, but I'm putting it here for that one person who will do a search and see the title and expect an answer!

I have been podcasting for well over a year and I can tell you that the best format is MP4. It looks the best, and it is small. Encoding can be tricky though.

I used to use Media Coder. It is a free project. and has a batch feature which is real nice.

The other reason I use MP4 is because it is best for iTunes.

I did have a codec problem as of late and have not been able to get it fixed, so Media Coder broke for me. now I am stuck encoding all my podcast videos with Camtasia Studio, which only lets you do MP4s in the ever popular iPod screen size! Yuck.

Ummm..what planet are you from and when did you get here? LOL

From a listeners standpoint, podcasting is basically picking the content you want and watching/listening whenever you want to. No more missed shows!

From a production standpoint, it's the best way to provide content and keep in touch with your audience, IMHO.

Encoding for what purpose? If you are going to upload to a flash based hosting service, i don't think it matters too much. Anything standard should work.

If you want it on iTunes, you should have it in QT.

I'm not sure if anything else really matters as almost everything is either viewed via a flash player or QT.

I have a mac And i use either brightcove publish pod cause it encodes itself and uploads onto site
or i compress it with mpeg stream clip which is like the holy grail for mac video converters then up to youtube from there

Usually i do this cause the files are to big for youtube

For "podcasting", you want to encode into an MP4 file which is compatible with iTunes and other video podcast feeds. Uploading it to YouTube, Vimeo or any of the various video sites doesn't require are specific format in most cases. But why encode it to more than one format? Simpy encode it to MP4 for iTunes compatiblity then upload that to your favorite video site (or your web site).

BTW, many "over the counter" video programs will encode to QuickTime/MP4 format including Ulead VideoStudio, Sony Vegas and other low end video editing programs for the PC. Or, you can just buy QuickTime and encode from that.
