Default How to hide irritating reciprocal links.

I was just thinking of an innovative way to hide reciprocal links on my blog. As many of you are no doubt aware, most link directories require that you give them a reciprocal link on your blog, but you may not like the way it looks.

Enclose the links with the following structure:

<div style="display: none;">
Links go in here.

</div>

The links are now completely gone for all apparent purposes. However, they will still leak PR from your blog. Now if there was only a way to make an entire <div> nofollow!

Technically, the link directories are just going to search your blog for the code, they aren't going to realize that it is enclosed within a hidden <div>. Pretty cool!

What a great tip. I ended up putting most of them on their own page, because it was too hard to put them on neatly anywhere else, it distracted from the blog look I was aiming for... Thanks for sharing.. When I finally get time I just may fix that now.

I had to set up a link page for them and hoped none of my visitors ever visits, as their wordings are long and annoying!

Yeah, hopefully this will keep them out of the way while still meeting their terms.

Wow! Sneaky! But isn't it also kind of unethical? Would Google penalise for hiding links? I heard they would so.... hmmm....

The average blog directory need two things: Links and visibility.

The links get their own pageranking up, thus the search engines point more visitors to them, thus up goes revenue through advertisement. Even with the <div> trick, the link from your blog to them remains.

The visibility through icons helps them "spread viral": One blogger discovers a directory on the blog of another, gets curious and checks out the directory. And subscribes.

I agree with Nathan, that having a myriad of directories on your blog does not look nice. Apart from the fact some actually require a script to be installed, and not just an icon, slowing down the download speed of your blog..

I did as Arcticulates did: I put all blog directories on a separate page. Know though that many 'free' directories fail to detect any links which are on a page of your blog, other than the root... I worked around that by registering with the link on the homepage, but then moved them.
