I asked my readers and they pretty much said they wanted me to continue to post once a day or more often, as they counted on coming to my page and getting something new and fresh to read. So I will continue to post as a minimum at least once a day. Gary (old dude) ThreeScorePlusTen |

I think if you can write 10 articles of great content a day then publish that many. Don't let the quality drop because you are trying to hit one a day. If not posting for 2 days will mean a better post in 2 days time then for the quality over quantity. If readers keep reading the odd post and finding it worthwhile then you will generate a trust in them that you do not post crap!

The most important thing is to meet the expectation of your readers, once you've got a pattern set. That's why it's important not to rush right in with a flood of posts when you first start blogging, but hold a bit in reserve until you test how much energy and time it will take to maintain the pace that you set for yourself. Consistency is the thing. And quality. Get those two nailed and you're in business.

It all depends what the purpose of your blog is. If you are writing 'for yourself and if someone reads it, the better', nothing matters. If you are -like most of us- kicking on loads of traffic, then the frequency of posting is not fully relevant. The traffic is the goal, so all has to be geared to your traffic. So the question then becomes 'how can I get more traffic to my blog, is the frequency of posting relevant?'. My blog currently has about 100,000 visits per year (excluding those reading via RSS and automatic emailing services). Of those visits, about 15-20% are regular readers, all the others are occasional (one time) visits, mainly via search engines and social bookmarking sites. This means even if I don't post regularly, I would still get 80% of my traffic, but as time goes by, this would gradually decrease as no material is added to be google'd. For those 15-20% of my regular readers, I have found, it is rather important to post regularly, otherwise -as time goes by- they loose interest and wander off. I post about 10x per week, but most posts are short. When I go on holiday, I pre-schedule posts, once per day. I've only been running a blog for six monthes now---according to my sitemeter stats I am now up to 40-44 visits a day. I have no idea who is looking at my blog----I do like getting comments however and to do that I would like more visits from more people----you mention rss feeds etc, I figure if visitors who want to capture my rss feed just do, I can't make them do it. I work on the premise that Rome wasn't built in a day---pretty sure it took the better part of acouple weeks. Gary (old dude) http://threescoreplusten.blogspot.com/ |

Also, if you feel the need to add more content to your blog than you really need to, use that time to improve other facets of your blog, like your links page or your gadgets. or your theme.

in that I run an ecletic sorta blog, that is to say not set topic of discussion, I feel the need to post as a minimum once a day and frequently do two postings to maintain a fresh page look. My traffic is building slowly as word gets out and more readers subscribe to my output---in anycase am kinda enjoying the challenge of posting daily.

I was thinking it might be fun to take a weekend and try pumping out as many posts as possible -- without sacrificing the quality, of course -- and publish them as soon as they're written, just to see what happens. What do you think -- would subscribers run away from the flood, or think your blog is broken? Or would it do good things? I have absolutely no idea and I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try -- but would love to know if anyone else has done this!
