What does it mean to PING your blog?

I keep reading about how you should ping your blog to blog search engines, etc., but I have no idea what that means. Obviously, I am new to this and need some explanations. Thanks for your help.

Sites like pingomatic "tell" servers that your page has been updated.

Whether or not it's necessary, I've seen both sides of the argument. Either way it seems like search engines will get to you when they want to.

pinging is service that does all the hard work for you, service that register and your blog on various other sites and help your blog in getting quickly indexed in to the search engine.

To ping your block means get crawl easily to the blog. There are some sites like pingomatic which tell servers that page is updated.

I have registered with ping-o-matic n send pings after post new content..will it help if i register on more than one of these ping websites? or is ping-o-matic enough?
