Digging through old threads if you haven't answered this let us know. It's always cool to hear how others create content; how do you know what you're doing now is effective if you don't know how others do it?

I go on abcnews or cnn and find a story that I find interesting and then I type about it for 10-15 minutes. I usually have an idea of what I want to write about before looking for a story.

It depends sometimes it comes quickly then on other occasions it can be hard work although usually it can take me almost as long to find an image to include with the post.

It depends on what I'm talking about. I usually don't do much research, as most of my information is based on experience. However, if I'm looking for specific information to include in my post, I will do research. I am a member of several forums within my niche and when a topic becomes hot in one of the forums, I'll generate my own opinion and post it in the forum(s) and then my blog. I find that's a good way for me to come up with content. Finally, if I'm looking to write reaction to a news article, I will usually read the article several times to get a good idea of what it's talking about before I post about it. As for a time frame, as I said, it depends. Can be anywhere from 5 minutes (my countdown posts for example) to 30-45 minutes. Also, if I'm thinking about something for a few days and get all the ideas in my head, it won't take long for me to blog them. (I'm an above-average typist.) Of course, after I post I will read it a couple times. I usually won't change anything, but if I realize I left something out or added an irrelevent comment, I will make those changes. |

If I am posting about something that I am really excited about... like I couldn't wait to get back to my computer and post it.. it doesn't take me very long. I probably get in too big of a hurry in this case and want to get the post up quickly. Then end up forgetting to write a bunch of things I wanted to say. I am with you Rob... I hit the publish button only to realize that I made a few mistakes and have to hit the edit button right away. HA!

It can take me up to an hour it depends on how many words I decide to write , and how much research I am supposed to do. But there has been one day , it took me around 4-5 hours to get the post done. Usually researching takes the most time , placing links and that stuff. Last edited by ghing; June 6th, 2008 at 06:01 PM.. Reason: remove links.. |

I think my process, falls into a unique area. I computer game (MMORPGs) as a hobby. For awhile, I had been telling stories to my friends, in the game I play, even to the point of us setting aside a Friday nights for me to tell tales on. A few friends requested I start a blog, to keep track of my tales, in case they missed some. Typical Friday gathering in my game I play, had my friends, trying to "stump me". More or less. They will say "Hoppa, tell a tale about fishing, and make sure there is a tea-cake in the tale, or don't forget a troll, add in a hammer, and then don't forget to have talking fish!" Or something equally silly. Well, now as a creative story teller, I need ti Improv the tale to them. The Whole story starts with what input I got from them, then I make the story up about established characters, and, try and make sure the tale "makes sense" in the process. So, the tale, takes anywhere from half hour, to an hour to tell. Next day, I edit the tale, re read it several times, clean up my spelling, make sure my grammar is acceptable, when my characters in the tale are not speaking and so on. Then, I do a really quick sketch, scan it in my computer, take that image into a drawing program, and add in the posts title. That takes about 15 minutes for the picture, about an hour to edit the story. So a total time, about 2 and a half hours I'd say. ( that is for my story blog ) For my cooking blog, posts take from 10 minutes to half hour. On this blog I do not worry so much about grammar |

I have two classifications of articles I write. One is just a quick update on where I am and what I'm doing. They take no time at all. The other are longer posts, integrated with photos, appropriate links and research. Those take several hours. |

Since I began my new fatherhood gig, I rarely have time to crank out a post fully in a single setting anymore. Instead, I almost always rough out the idea for an article in one shot. Then I revisit, add links, find a suitable graphic (if needed) and tweak on it over another one or two (or a small series of) subsequent rounds of editing as I have a little time here & there through the day. It works well for me in that I get a chance to really look over what I've got before punching the "publish" button. At the same time, it also means that I sometimes overwork and/or overthink a post and some of my final edits are spent going back & trimming some of the extraneous crap back out to lean the writing up a bit. Sometimes I get way too wordy when I've let a post simmer too long... I've been trying to get back into the habit of banking up a few future posts so I have some material to fall back on when I'm short on time or inspiration, but lately, my well has been kinda dry. |
