Do you stretch before, after or while blogging? I know a few of you may be laughing but if you spend serious amounts of time on the computer like many of us it's a good idea. That being said I wish I did but I rarely if ever do and when I do it's not for as long as I should. I'm going to start though as I'm getting wrist pain. A year ago I went to all sorts of tests carpal tunnel, everything and I have nothing. (Relief) but at the same time why the pain? After a few physiotherapists I found out that the reason I have pain in my hands is because I don't stretch. If you are crouched over a keyboard for 8-10 hours a day the nerves tighten up and are most felt at your extremities such as your hands. OSH Answers: Stretching - At the Workstation That's a good starting point. I just thought I'd ask who stretches and if so what kind of stretches do you do? Rob

I do yoga stretches though out the day and look away from the screen out of the window every half an hour or so. I'm starting pilates next week too! your wrist pain could be becaus eyour leaning on it preventing blood and messages getting to your hand. I know I have inflamed tendons in my wrist. Not to mention all my other neck problems! yoga helped loads though! (makes me flexible too!! !)

As a diabetic I need to make sure that move a lot. Sitting at a computer for ten plus hours a day can be bad news for diabetics. In addition to the problems that healthy people have, diabetics have to watch circulation problems, especially in the legs. I make it a practice to get up for 10 minutes every hour and go outside and walk around. I also start each day with a 1.5 mile walk. Yes.... definitely move, stretch and walk around..... |

As I am archaeologist, journalist and vagabond I spend lot of time outside. Nevertheless I had a bad experience last December. I spent almost whole month in the front of computer and I got a problems with the spine. For a couple of months I had had a pain in my back and then I lost sense of my thumb and two other fingers in my right hand. I could move them normally but I couldn't fill them . There were only "ants running through it". It was serious, due to the fact that I am also a guitar player in 2 bands that play gigs quite often. I got rid of that 2 months later, and so far luckily has not any other signals of that. It was a problem with neck section of the spine, becasue head was in one not normal position for a long period. My friend who is a full time journalist has a serious problem with the neck section of the spine. He spent couple of months on a therapies. |

I'm glad to hear(well not glad but you know what I mean) I'm not the only one who suffers adverse affects when exposed to ridiculous computer usage! Today is the first day of my stretching so I did a 5-10 minute routine before I started. I plan on doing this routine ~3X daily and I'll keep you posted on how it goes. I woke up this morning and decided "enough was enough". I"ve had this list of stretches for quite some time and I'd be devastated if I couldn't spend as much time as I please online all because I didn't spend the occasional 5-10 minutes here and there to stretch. Realistically it makes perfect sense to have to stretch; we're large mammals who genetically are built for other purposes. We are definitely not designed for tens of thousands of micro movements each day with small parts of our body. I guess we have to treat our bodies like machines and do the inevitable maintenance if we wish to continue running smoothly!

I did one solid stretching session which is more than I've done in the last oh maybe few months so it's a start. I find if you get into something it's easy to zone out and "come to" hours later.
