Default EX Google Employees Starting CUIL Search Engine as Rival?

Seems like some ex employees of Google are starting their own search engine CUIL pronounced "Cool".

Former Google employees prepare rival search engine - International Herald Tribune

I think if it does deliver better results the blogosphere will have to pick it up and spread the word. I mean google is a household name now it will take some time to get the word out / compete. Remember that's ONLY if it delivers AMAZING results.

Time will tell

What do you think?

I checked out today, doesn't seem like much, yet. Seems to put out results that are similar to yahoos results.

blah, i am sorry but nothing even "rivals" Google. How much better do you have to be to be considered a "rival"?

If Google is #1, with apps and all, then what chance does any search engine have?

Do you think the search could produce better results? Right now, IMO, Google search is better than Yahoo or MSN, but what do I know? I am certainly not an ex employee of one of the best!

I love what they are doing as far as the home page (black actually consumes less power and is more eco-friendly and will extend the life of your monitor) and the display of the search results is innovative. I really *really* like still having access to all the functions while browsing the results- however the results themselves are no where near Googles. After a couple more years of 'listening' on the web, who knows though? What I was really annoyed about was that it displayed all those kscript sites that just pull from YouTube, so if your search came up with a YouTube video, it also came up with all those Script sites that have picked it up. I believe Google filters those, or at least I haven't seen them there.

I don't really like it. I don't think it will rise to the level of Google anytime soon.

Heck, Cuil returned 2.78 billion fewer results than Google did for the term "blog".
Yes, Cuil is new but I don't think it will acquire 2.78 billion more listings anytime soon.

Cklords, regarding the black saving energy:
This is only true of some CRT based monitors. LCD based monitors use the same electricity to draw black pixels as they do for any other color. However an LCD will use about 30% of the electricity of a CRT on average.

The Numbers Guy : Does a Darkened Google Really Save Electricity?

I keep hearing about this and frankly, at this point it sucks. If it gets better I'll recheck it out, but I'm certainly not impressed right now. I tried several simple searches like "box" and "nice" and got zero search hits. I won't be using it until it can actually compete.

I think they launched too early. Some of the results were completely bogus. I bet they will eventually fixed these problems, but you only get one chance to make a first impression and they failed at that.

Jessi... How did you get zero results? they come up with lots when i search those phrases. It's definitely not as good as google results, and a lot of international mumbo jumbo makes it into there, but as I said, it may improve with time and spidering. I do LOVE that search interface though. I wonder if they plan to go the Google route with a host of Webapps...they would look and work great with that interface.

I dont think any website can be launched too early. What a better way to get feedback? Although it doesn't seem "complete" I am sure they are on top of their game every chance they have.

I don't think anything will ever "top" Google, but if anyone has a chance, it would be ex-employees.
