Default Soliders in the Army Blogging?!?

This blog discusses the concept of soldiers in the army blogging. A consultant brings up a great point of possibly releasing sensitive information or just the makings for a Stephen King like story.

Of course you have to be careful of sensitive information when blogging. I do my best not to identify anyone or their animals if they haven't specifically asked to be identified, because I deal with confidential client information too.

But a soldier's blog would be of great interest to their families too. If it's even going to be considered it would have to have very strict guidelines of what is and isn't acceptable, or to be contained within a closed network.

I agree on the very strict guidelines and would be best if lower ranked soliders did it. Higher ranked ones would need some SEVERE communication lessons first because they are basically exposed to highly confidential information all the time which could be a recipe for disaster if in the hands of the enemy. (Felt so militaristic saying that!)

Wasn't there something in the news a while back, some kerfuffle about Canadian soldiers on tour in Afghanistan being on Facebook?

I think blogging is a great way to record history. It is no different from memoirs in past wars.

Actually, it's totally different.

Blogs are current. They're talking about events in the 'now' not '50 years ago'. That's what makes their information potentially dangerous.

They would have to be mindful of what they were writing but serving in the armed forces is like no other job even more so if you are in an operational theatre.

It would provide a great insight into what things are like at the sharp end and would make for very interesting reading.

I think it is a great way for the soldiers to vent. You have to belief all the things they faced are built up into them, so a blog would be a great place to release.
