I am curious on what everyone has experienced, or a link to a study / article, on the preferred format for affiliate ads through folks such as Commission Junction, LinkShare, etc.. This would be from a perspective of both generating those ad clicks but also with web design astectics. For example, is it better to have say an area on the side (left or right) with a collection (8 to 10) of those 125 X 125 pxl square ad graphics from different affiliate advertisers or a much smaller collection (say 3 to 4) of those 120 X 240 verticle semi-skyscraper typ ad graphics? Or, is it better (although personally I think it's a little bit devious) to simply have the text links within a blog post. Or, what about substituting an affiliate ad at the end of a blog post in place of an Adsense ad if one usually uses Adsense at the end of a blog post. Or, .... Appreciate the thoughts and experiences.

| I've heard that blog visitors get turned off by ads inside the articles. Thoughts?

The 125x125 have become really popular...but 8 or 10 of them seems like too many. Maybe 6 or so and a banner at the top, and maybe one in the article if the article is a decent sized one.

I'm a fan of weaving it into an article ... and it's doing well for me ... but I'm VERY upfront on my blog that the info there is free and I'm willing to help anyone who asks ... and that instead of charging for help I appreciate that if/when they see a product or service advertised or mentioned on my blog that they use my links. I get people emailing saying, "I'm ready to buy XX so how to I do it so you get credit?" ... That's music to my ears. *SmiLes* Suzanne

I don't have a problem with affiliate text links in the flow of the article, and I'm speaking as both a blog/site creator and blog/site visitor. I would suggest you set the link to open in a new window, though. That way people can check out whatever you're linking to without losing their place in your article (or open the page to look at after they've finished your article). It would also be a good idea to let your visitors know links inside the article open in a new window, otherwise they might be reluctant to click on them.

It all really depends on your sites traffic and content. I recommend split testing a few different layouts to see which one yields the best profit. What is good for someone else, might not be good for you. |
