I have an Amazon astore (which is free). Is this what you are talking about or are you talking about some software that taps into Amazon's database and creates a store that way?

This creates a store front just like a bans store. It really just looks like a regular ecommerce website, I am sort of impressed to tell you the truth. It doesnt seem to have any connection with amazon until the checkout.

I dont know, I just took up the trial and wrote a review on it. I haven't seen any stores like this online so I am not sure how popular it really is.
