Default Pricing your links

How do you determine what a link in your blog's sidebar is worth? If I was to try selling spots on DP or the like, how would I determine what a fair price is for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, a year or forever? I don't understand how people determine their value.

#1 I wouldn't sell links forever. The money seems good but over the course of eternity it's bad

#2 You probably shouldn't sell for pagerank (yes, I don't practice what I preach).

#3 You should sell to relevant page listings rather than casino/pharma (which you'd probably get on DP)

#4 Do you have adsense? Adsense tells you eCPM (which estimated earnings per 1000 hits), you should work out how much money you get per month by multiplying the eCPM by (how many hits you get per month/1000). Sell it for no less than that.

So, if I wanted to sell X sidebar links on a blog to quality-screened sites, I shoudl work out the adsense earnings per month for the blog, and sell them based on that? Not divided by however many links I plan to sell?

Should I be showing some adsense/analytics stats, or would I be alright saying 'there's project wonderful ads on there, they have recorded stats you can view'?

I assume that mentioning alexa and PR is only worth it if they're something to brag about.

Does it matter how often the blog gets updated? would they really look that hard if it had PR?

I agree with EVERYTHING that Rhys said except the last part which I'm not totally clear on. To be honest Ferox if I were you I would NOT sell any links on DP. Rather I'd post here and on DP for link exchanges in the vet / medical niche. You'll get targetted traffic from your exchanges and it will help your site rank better as it's natural relevant links coming in. Maybe it's paranoia but I'd stay way from selling your sidebar links and above all else the internet is dynamic so never ever sell anything for a lifetime you'll regret it in a month or so

The issue is even if you sell one to someone innocently for some $$$ in hopes to give them traffic if one of those people have an offending site that gets picked up they'll look at there link profile and boom have paid links from you. I think DP is a dangerous place for that type of thing in today's day in age.

Default Re: Pricing your links

I think I understand what Rhys is saying.

Say if you have adsense on your blog, and it earns $1 a day. From there your blog has 100 hits per day. This means that the eCPM is $10 ($1 for every 100 hits means that for 1000 hits you should get $10).

If you get 100 hits per day then you get 3000 hits per month.

What happens therefore is that to work out how much you should charge for a link per month you should times the estimated CPM (which is $10) with how many times you make 1000 hits in a month (which is on this example 3).

So, therefore the formula is:

how much you should charge = how much you earn every 1000 hits*(how many hits you get per month/1000)

So in our example it will be

10*(3000/1000) = $30

So you should be charging $30 for a link. The reason he said sell for no less than that is that if you charge less than that then you will lose money as it'll be more profitable for you to put an adsense block there.

However i'm not so sure if I'd go with that, because links/adsense units have different click through rates, benefits etc.

I hope this helps

I'm not sure if there are enough people browsing the buy/trade/sell forums here for me to get much of a response, which was why I was thinking of trying DP.

And I wasn't plannng to sell out NDF just yet, I was thinking more of corollax because that already has a PR that I can mention. Although NDF gets much more traffic and higher conversions, still no PR.

Never hurts to post more then one place but I think you'd be best in the link exchange section instead of link sales. Just MHO.
