I think that a free platform is the best place to start. Blogging is a bit of a discipline and not all of the lessons can be learned from the outside and in any case, why not earn enough from a free blog to pay for your domain name and hosting and then make the switch! No risk that way (except for time of course!)

Thanks for the post. I have started earning a little form various sources but my first $20 was re-iinvested in probably the wrong thing. I need to learn to just leave it my account.

What a lot of people don't seem know is that you can have your own domain name with your blogspot blog. It's very easy too. I don't know why people still use the blablabla.blogspot.com address when they can buy a doman for six bucks and just ask Blogger to use that one instead. That way you can also migrate to another hosting platform and still keep the same domain. If it were't for that I would have NEVER started my blogs on a blogspot blog.

The blog in my sig is on blogpspot, but you wouldn't know that from the domain name.

Thanks Harald, I never realised that. Does that also remove the blogspot toolbar at the top? How would you access the admin side of things?

It doesn't automatically remove the blogspot toolbar (or navbar), if you want it removed (something I personally prefer) you have to do that with the code (go to Edit HTML). I asked a question about this on the the Blog Premiere | Blogging Magazine forum, and someone gave me a link on how to remove it. Check it out:

Valid, Hide or Remove Blogger NavBar » Dani Iswara Weblog

Seems pretty easy and straight forward, so I'm going to go ahead and do that today for my new blog. Some of the free templates come without the toolbar - a good thing in my opinion as I think the toolbar can greatly diminish the blog's appearance.

My previous two blogs (that I just dabbled with for a short while) used third party free templates that had no toolbar and that worked out fine. They even looked half decent - something you rarely see on a blogspot blog (and I will be the first to admit that my blog at The Corner needs a cosmetic enhancement).

As for the admin side of things you just log into blogger.com as usual and do your stuff from there. I keep two tabs open - one with my blog the way it looks to visitors, and one with my admin panel / dashboard.

As someone at that other forum pointed out, it might be good to replace the toolbar with some sort of search function on your blog as some readers like to use that. I've noticed that myself on my other blogs - quite a few people have used the search function for those. If you're using a template that doesn't have a search function implemented, you'll probably have to put do some (easy) coding for that as well. I'll find out how to put on up there and let you know - let me know if you should stumble upon something in the meantime!

Great!

I think if only more people knew about this they would get themselves their own domains. I mean, you can have one for less than it costs to see a movie - it's not as if the money is going to stop anyone. And then you pretty much have your own site, and all the traffic you can get too - with Google paying for your hosting. I actually made that joke to someone earlier today. I said I just started blogging and getting into affiliate marketing again and he asked me (he might have assumed I was using the Wordpress.Org platform) what kind of web hosting service I was using. I told him "Oh, I have a special deal, Google is paying for the hosting for Corner77.com. No limits on traffic either." He was like, "huh???"

I didn't know that you could have your own name with a blogspot blog (don't really read the blogger posts/news). Might be an idea to do so for me. I have spent a lot of time editing my template, positioning and adding adsense, custom search, menu bar, etc, learning from tutorials (e.g. blogger buster, new tips for bloggers, blogger beta for dummies, etc) to try to make my blogger blog (in my sig) more like a web site. I believe a blogger based blog can be optimized and enhanced, but requires a lot of learning (html/css hacks) and time...
