I personally don't have any ads on my blog... I'm not looking to make money from the blog. Really, it's more of a way for me to document what I'm doing in life... Maybe I'll add an advertisment later on as I get more readers, but ads will always be small on my blog.

That's a good way to look at it. Sadly many are the polar opposite doing it exclusively to make money. First comes the traffic THEN comes the $$$ if it's coming at all.

Some extra money won't harm anyone (much).

Agreed. You have to build an audience and traffic before you can monetize your blog, and even then, if you just slap affiliate links and banners everywhere, you will lose your readers pretty fast. I like to keep it simple and to a minimum when it comes to ads.

Agreed it's easy to oversell and it occurs to many of us from time to time. When you oversell ads that clash and are loud especially you're really underselling yourself I've found.

I think it all zeroes down to your purpose of putting up a blog. If you've set it up for commercial use, then setting up ads even if your blog is still in its infancy stage is ok.

If the ad is relevant to the content, and is properly displayed, then I think it adds to the usefulness of the site. There are many times that I search sites (recently looking for CMS packages), that I clicked on relevant ads.

With that said, Google Adsense, and other advertising, are nowadays taking so much of the ad revenue, that there isn't much left over. I am sure that some sites can negotiate a higher percentage of the revenue cut, but the smaller sites are being savaged, so the ability to make money from ads is slowly disappearing in any case.

You don't have to listen to this advice... go with whatever works for you. It's more of a trial and error approach.
