I don't know how I feel about pay per play. The concept is nice obviously, but what I'd like to know is about what percentage would people be so turned away from PPP that you would lose traffic...which would be of importance if you want your visitors to come back. I'm kind of leaning towards to negative side of PPP more than the positive due to my "anti-marketing" background (since it plays automatically, it's rather evasive which you don't want if you do anti-marketing). I will give this a try on one of my blogs though since I signed up a while ago, and see how it pans out.

I listen to Digitally Imported Radio - Free Internet Radio Stations | DI.fm all the time when I'm online; every now and then they have adverts and I'm so conditioned to it from television I don't care; I either block them out or hear them process them and frankly it doesn't bother me at all.

That is totally, totally different. The ads play between the tracks, right? And you wouldn't expect a second radio station to interrupt the one you're listening to with its own ads, would you? Similarly, if I'm listening to music on the computer, I don't expect an audio ad to play on the top of it.

An Internet radio station or an online television channel could easily get away with these ads if they were slotted between other content. But that's just it. I think these ads are only going to work on media sites. Opening them to the public (i.e. bloggers and people who own small websites) just seems like a way to generate revenue for the owners of the scheme, never mind what it does to the traffic of the sites who sign up.

I do agree with the theory of trying things out to see how they go, but you have to adopt a "softly, softly" approach. I am currently a bit worried that I have one or two ads too many on my site, but I want to trial a few schemes simultaneously. However, when I look around the web, I know my site is far less "busy" than some. I don't put every possible ad on my site - it would overwhelm people and probably put them off.

The problem with audio ads is that even if you're just trying them out, such an intrusive ad could easily lose you a lot of visitors immediately. Removing the audio ads because they didn't work out for you will not automatically regain those lose visitors. On the other hand, if I add one ad box to my site, that is far less likely to drive people away.

As I've said on my blog, having audio ads on websites that aren't media-focused is like getting one of those birthday cards that plays really bad quality music when you open it. It's unexpected, it's annoying, and it doesn't make you want to go back for another look. Well, in my opinion, anyway.

I know what you're saying Ben.

In the middle unexpected is better then say at the end of a track but still unexpected no less. We also have to remember the first qualifier is what type of blog or site it is and what kind of traffic / how web savvy and what's the sought after action that you hope the browser does. For some plain old boring information sites or things similar I've mentioned before I think it would be a good way to go. I wouldn't run it here for example.

If it makes it through roll out it should be interesting when millions of ads are being served daily.

Default I Don't Like it

I have been visiting alot of sites and I really don't like the voice ads at all. I had originally signed up to have this on my Blog until I started listening to the people who actually visit my Blog as well as others and the consensus seems to be that people don't want to come upone a page and not expect to hear a voice, specially if their speakers are up and most say they could care less about taco bell which I guess was one of the first ads to run
All in all I think that if people arrive on a site using this method they will quickly hit the back button never to return again.
That's my 2 cents.
