Advertising banner space on your blog?

I am new to the whole blog game and have learned a lot in the past couple months. I was wondering how common is it for people to sell banner space on their blogs? How do they go about selling? I'm just going to have a link that says "advertise with us". On that page I plan to have a screen shot of my site, highlight the spots that are available for banner ads and post the price.

Does this sound like a good idea?

I'm not going to implement this page on my blog yet. I'll wait till I have a couple thousand unique hits a day. But I am starting to set up this page so when I want to launch all I have to do is upload the page to my server.

Definitely a good idea. You don't need THAT many daily uniques either to sell advertising. If you have targeted traffic in the hundreds its better than not targeted traffic in the thousands.

Don't make your prices too unrealistic and go for monthly plans so if things change for either of you changes can be made. If you plan on increasing prices give current subscribers a few months "notice" so they can stay or look elsewhere cheaper.

Also only take the business from sites that would potentially benefit your readers. I know it's hard at times but this will actually add to your site instead of just make it look like it sold out.

Great idea though "private ad sales" are often one of the larger money makers for any blog / site.

thanks bloggeries, I always get detailed and insightful information from your replies. Hmmmm, true, getting banner offers from unrelated advertisers would be tempting, but in the long run, hurtful to any site.

I'll look around the net to see how much people are charging for banner ads. From there I can calculate how much I want to charge.

How many uniques do you think you should have before you start going the private ad route? I am wondering because I am thinking about going that route also.

I'm wondering this also.

The way I'm thinking about advertising private banner ads on my site is to compile my stats from my site for the latest three months and display that screen shot on my site. This would give potential advertisers a deciding factor whether or not they would want to advertise with me. Plus, my regular visitors can take a look at my stats as well. For some reason, I think curiousity, people are always interested in the stats of the website they are looking at.

But if their is any other proven methods to go about selling private banner ads then I'm all ears.

Doesn't matter. 2,000 uniques a day for a celebrity site - normal ; 100 for some rare niche = LOTS.

It depends on size of your niche.

Frankly you can put it up whenever you want. I wouldn't give out stats or anything like that. I'd make it so if they want advertising they can contact you. If someone is too lazy to contact you they are too lazy to pay you.

I've learned that with time. Basically get them to contact you; assess their needs and tell them the benefits of advertising with you. When they ask for info give it.

Always work monthly; I can't stress this enough. Also if someone wants to sell permanent to you. Don't!!!! They will realize they made a mistake, take your link down than ignore you like some are doing to me. The reason this happens is 3 months later they can get what you paid perm monthly and now they are bitter. Don't do this to yourself. You'll label yourself as a flip flopper and lose respect. Taking down ads that were paid for is a big NO NO. Without credibility online you have very little.

I am trying to figure out where a good place for me to advertise for my forum would be...I think I have found a couple of good places.

I am not sure though...2,000 Uniques a day would be amazing...I would love that. I would be making good money at that point.

Well, don't be so sure. I have more that 2,000 uniques a day and I do not make good money.

Wait seriously, how do you advertise your site? I am trying to get 2,000 uniques a day, I would find a way to make good money off of that...

Almost all of my visitors come through search engines. If you google "free movies" my site is in the first page of the results. I don't really know how I managed to do this, I guess I am very lucky. Also I am making link exchange and be active in a few forums.

As I can see your site is about movies too, so I think it would be easy to advertise it. Also if you want we can exchange links.

Do you have any ideas on how I can earn more money from my blog? I am starting to think that I have made a mistake with the banners (I have put them in the wrong place)
