Noob question about profitability of keywords...

First of all, this is an awesome resource. Thanks to all who contribute...

For the past two weeks, I have been trying to narrow down my blog topic. While I understand what resources are available to research the profitability of blog topics, I'm still a little fuzzy on determining what's an acceptable benchmark to be looking for.

In other words, if using Google AdWords Keywords search tool, how many global/monthly searches should I look for? What's too low? What's considered too high? How much competition is good? How many search results is "too many" when I am just doing a regular search? Finally,what average CPC numbers should I be looking for?

Any help, would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have answers for you as I am just as clues as you seem to be (if not more so) when it comes to keywords and how to use them. I have a feeling that these types of questions are going to depend upon your niche topic as from what I gather some topics will provide more competition thus higher cpc numbers.

I think that looking for a solid "long-tail" type of key word search is best for a blog starting out as it's very targeted and will help you reaching higher page numbers on search results. The problem with targeting too commonly sought after keywords is your new blog will never stand a chance against others already anchored in the first pages of the results.

I've only just begun my research on the subject though so hopefully someone will come along to give us both an idea of where to start.
