I have heard some very excellent things about it since my original post. However it certainly is hard to get any referrals to the program. I'm still implementing it in small doses and possibly will ramp it up as the holiday season approaches.

I haven't had any luck with this so far. I was hoping it was just because my blog is pretty new but after reading everyone elses comments I'm not too hopeful about it.

@theeventof - Sorry this wil be short and quick. Did you remove the Amazon ads from your blog because I didn't see any just now? I also laughed at your most recent blog post about giving up coffee and caffeine! Shhhhhh Let's not talk like that. I depend on a caffeinated readership!

Amazon ads, especially for books, are one of the least annoying and most respectable-looking ads that I see on blogs. But if you link them to _words_ in a post, then all that acceptable respectability goes out the window. Content and advertising absolutely _must_ be separate, IMO, for a blog to be anything but a big brochure. I would strongly advise against ruining your bog by mixing content and ads.

I use Amazon ads for book reviews but it has been quite sometime I haven't reviewed any book. Perhaps I should start one soon.

I have used it too, but haven't made any money from it. I suppose you need a LOT of traffic to make any money from it. Unless you want to fill a page with affiliate links, there is a limit to the number of products to which you can link. I mean, for example, if your website is made up of twenty pages and you put one ad on each page, that is still only twenty links. And unless your site is getting major traffic I still don't think that is enough.

Unless you are reviewing a different book each day, to which you can link, you are pretty restricted.

Personally, I have changed my approach from linking to specific products to linking to an amazon main page, for example, their electronics storefront, books storefront, textbooks storefront, etc. It saves me the trouble of thinking too much and I seem to be getting lazier as I get older.

Perhaps I will even consider some other affiliate programs; they exist for just about anything; Club Med, coffee, etc.

@DuncanM - What would be considered a lot of traffic to you? Just curious. I'm still interested in doing this.

I think about 1000 visitors per day is the bare minimum for trying to monetize a web site by any means (AdSense, affiliate program, etc.).

To me, 20,000 visitors a day or more would be a more reasonable number for generating enough money to quit your day job and living off your website. And 100,000 visitors a day or more is what I would consider a LOT and would allow you to actually get ahead instead of just staying out of bankruptcy.

Of course, I haven't tried many programs so results may vary. For example, a niche blog like yours and, say, the affiliate program at coffee.org might have a higher click-through rate and higher commissions than I have seen. In this case, my numbers would have to be adjusted.

Well I appreciate that honest reply. I am just at the point where I am thinking about being an Amazon Affiliate but my numbers are that high yet. (Not at 1000 uniques a day yet). The idea of monetizing my blog is sort of last in my thoughts of what I am doing with it, and this thread has been helpful. Thanks!
