I mean real sponsorship where you are paid to put the ad up not where you put the ad up for free and pray someone clicks on it.

Is it best to do it on your own or to go through a third party?

If you want that kind of sponsorship you are going to have to ensure people that you have a really nice, well trafficked blog. You'll have to show them page view stats. And even then they probably won't pay you much because its a risky venture: if they don't get any clicks they don't get any benefit at all.

That's why such ads aren't usually used except on very high traffic blogs that get hundreds or even thousands of visits a day. On such blogs an ad is almost guaranteed to generate a certain number of clicks.

If you think you can get people to spend, I'd recommend you make a package or a page that explains costs etc and how to apply for a spot.
