Im afraid that 1% never happens to Adsense anymore. I had Adsense in my dating site but as only one Lao Babes banner showed up which wasn't much to my audience and the click thru rates where something 0.1 so I had earned $40 to my Adsense account. When I started to rotate some affiliate banners there, the click thru rate went to 3% which is still lower than my mobile sites are doing with nearly 7%.
I hoped to save it by launching Internet directory where could be more different ads to be shown with the hope, that maybe I could reach my Adsense account to $100, get my money out and forgot Adsense.
To my surprise I have now over 10K page views and not a single click. And sites in my directory are getting clicks so It's not robots or site submitters only visiting this directory.
So the the conclusion is: Adsense does not make money because people are not clicking to Adsense ads anymore.
When I will have more established directory I will start to sell positions myself. There are several free open source products to do it. Forget the Google, forget the Adsense.

I beg to differ....my only form of income is Adsense and I am getting SOME money flowing in, at a current average rate of 62c/day. My blogs have been active for about 3 months now and because I'm blogging about stuff I like, it's not a chore. Will I make big money? Probably not in the near future, but I'm on my way...should be receiving my first bank transfer in about 2 months...

IE now blocks Adsense. THIS is a concern, which means people should be looking at different monetizing systems. Luckily, a growing number of people use Firefox, Chrome, Mozilla...etc. etc....

Good luck....

Default Adsense + other ads

Adsense is "contextual" i.e. ads are matched to the page content by page analysis

google forbid adsense publishers to have another contextual ad network on the same page as their adsense ads

if you can do it technically, you can have adsense on some pages and another ad network such as yahoo on other pages - but as adsense pays the most I can't see why you'd bother

you are allowed to have adsense on the same page as other non-contextual ads such as those contained in "non-intelligent" ad rotators, or static ads

Thumbs down forget Adsense Clicks - eCPM is what matters

I wanted to see what other people said before I replied

I get wildly differing adsense clickthough rates on my various blog sites - but this month the average is exactly 1 percent (was 1.46 percent last month) - not sure if its Summer, ad blockers, ad blindness, or maybe even ad boredom

forget clickthrough rates, its the eCPM that interests me - the amount of money earned per 1,000 pageviews - up on last month at an average of $6.45 this month ($5.14 last month)

so clickthroughs are down but earnings are up - very strange

what is clear is that half a cent per pageview is half what I was getting a couple of years ago, when I was getting 1 cent per pageview - and at the time I thought I was being robbed by google!

Yes, that is a great post.

Would I be right in saying that image ads perform better than text links?

Hi,

text links work better than image ads - its a case of "ad blindness" - also lots of people are now using ad blocking plugins with their web browsers

I used to do the SEO / promotion of a portal site and had good success with in content text links - where you hyperlink a word or phrase in the content - and the link opens up another page with pre-sell content and a link to an affiliate program - or if you don't have the time, just open up another window on clickbank or whoever

Adsense, Chitika, and other pay-per-click advertising only work well with high traffic.

The best click-through ratio I've ever heard is only 1.6% (in Chitika), which means if you have 1000 visitors you'll get about 16 clicks.

If your traffic is low, I suggest using affiliate marketing or writing reviews.

Everything relevant to your topic is good for affiliating. If the product delivers great value, that will be better.

With 100 visitors/day you can join reviewme.com or blogsvertise.com to write reviews. You'll get task with $5-10 each. If in a week you can get one task, that's already way above Adsense in earning (1 click/day). Having good pagerank, Alexa rank, link popularity, and Technorati rank is good with the two above.

Cheers

just try different placement for google adsense and also just try to place your google adsense ads between your content and you will get maximum clicks.
