I think it's been a bit of a mixed bag. Pay per click ads seem fine. Affiliate sales of big ticket items like TVs are down. Sales of stress management goods and services are up.

My blog isn't a money maker at this point, and that hasn't been my driving motive in creating and maintaining it. However, it seems to me that in a recession, people have more desire for useful info and that my blog is a way to deliver that.

Blogging and web development shouldn't be hit too hard by the recession. Different niches however will be. There may be less of a demand to visit sites that have something to do with discretionary income and more emphasis on money making, employment, and green energy sites. Because of this, some bloggers will say that the recession is affecting blogging overall when it is really affecting the niche that they blog about.

Whenever there is some bad news on the tv it seems to have an instant impact regarding consumer spending. Serious bloggers will ride out the recession and with a little imagination can directly take advantage from it.

I am actually feeling that the global recession is giving the internet much more traffic than before. People are staying at home and spending more time surfing the internet, which means more people will stumble on blogs that interest them.

I agree with Skerry above that the recession affects anything and everything - although sometimes that effect is positive. Depends on your niche and how you're monetizing your blog - I've noticed ebook sales are down, however, my copywriting business is booming. I'm doing more blog and writing jobs than ever.

How the recession affects blogging depends more on the niche of the blog in question. I've noticed traffic down on a few of my product review and travel sites, but traffic is up on an employment tips blog I have and a make money online blog. This is way too small of a sample to evaluate the internet as a whole on, but I would guess that blogging will stay the same or grow moderately, but possibly be focused at different blogs. It makes sense really, if people have less discretionary income then they'll frequent sites that require that income less. If people find themselves in a position of needing a job or wanting to work at home then they'll frequent those sites more. The traffic is probably still about the same, people's wants and needs have just changed somewhat which has changed their website visitation patterns. Just my opinion.

It seems to me that at least on my sites, the higher paying ads are drying up. There seems to be less advertising competition translating to less revenue for me. I'm making less with adsense as well as with some of the other CPC networks I belong to. I'm guessing companies are being a little tighter with their dollars nowadays and have to target their ads as much as possible getting the most bang for the buck. Is anyone else see their adsense and other CPC networks paying less per click on average over the last 6 months or so than you were getting on average around 2 years ago?
