Well, I certainly make money ... but no, I don't blog for money.
Enough to pay my hosting costs, keep me drunk enough to make my posts somewhat interesting and a toy now and then - its all good! |

I don't blog for money, but some people have told me I should. They're probably wrong.
If I blogged for money then it would become a job. Then I'd worry about whether my posts were marketable or not. Then I'd start second guessing myself. Then I'd feel like a sellout. So I'd rather keep the money out of it unless it comes to me. So far it hasn't (apart from a few offers which I turned down). So be it.

At the moment I am blogging for fun and because I really enjoy writing about travelling, culture, the outdoors etc etc. I also have no reader base at the moment because the blog is about 4 days old haha. If it takes off and people actually like the blog I see no problem with trying to make money off it.
What could be better than getting paid to do something I enjoy? |

I have now 4 paid advertisements on my blog. The requests came by email. They pay with Paypal. I did not ask for it, neither did I solicite or chase this opportunity...
After I subtract the costs to run my blog (flickr subscription, some software, ...), I invest the money left into social projects (microfinancing projects) via Kiva.org... I don't want to make money through my blog perse. I like the fact people think it is good enough to "buy" the space/links. It is flattering. And I feel good for the fact I can re-invest the money in something worthwhile, which in its turn is also something my readers' base likes. But I do not feel I blog for money. Money was not the goal. I don't write in view of possible investers I might or might not attract. I write about what I like. P.

I don't blog for money as its more of a hobby for me. I am mainly focused on making great content than trying to make money. I do run adsense in hopes of making money, but I've probably only made around $80 in adsense in the last year even though my traffic is growing steadily. I would love to blog for money, but unfortunately I don't really have that kind of traffic. My dream would be to make a living by blogging and podcasting, but that doesnt seem to be happening.

Anyway, gotta quit these late night rants. The reason why I go on about this, I think, is that I see people at places like Digital Point getting into blogging for the money. These kids would be greatly helped by realizing that there is other stuff they can do which is much more likely to help them achieve both their monetary and their personal goals. They'd probably make more money flipping burgers, and even if they do ok with blogging (fat chance....) I think there's no way they'd be able to do it long term and find any sort of fulfillment in it. After all, it really doesn't matter how far you climb the ladder if it's leaning against the wrong wall.
