I'm looking for a new laptop. I've used an IBM for years with great success but need a new one.
I'm leaning towards DELL due to the price however I have heard LOTS of horror stories. If you have a laptop; what kind and how is it working out for you?

My latest one is an HP and it's been running great for nearly a year now. My older one is an Advent which I've had to have fixed a couple of times in the last 6 years and the battery doesn't work now, but it's still going strong despite this.
Go to a shop that has some on display and play around with the touchpad and keyboard. You'll get a feel for the brand that way and get some idea of what your looking for.

I have a Dell and overall, it's good for the price you pay. If you ever need tech support, though, you're screwed, lol. If you can handle most problems yourself, then meh, it probably won't be an issue for you in the first place....but make sure you have insurance/warrant updated on it because as with most things, stuff tends to go out just as its expiring. Keep a paper trail of who you talked to if you get ran around, etc, because it's easier to get things done that way. These are things you can run into with 'any' company, though, so it's really nothing against Dell itself....it's just that their customer service department is largely outsourced and it's hard to get past the people that are simply following the directions off their screen. That's great for people who don't know much about computers and need basic troubleshooting...but beyond that, it's just a waste of time.

I've heard of horror stories before I bought my Dell 640m a year ago too. A blogger friend even showed me pictures of Dell laptops going up in flames. But since I could only afford a Dell (not even a cheap Acer!), I had to settle with with 640m, which had never given me any problem since June 2006.
Have faith, Rob

I will try and have faith. I never thought of ACER as a quality brand though maybe I'm mistaken? I loved my IBM but man they are expensive to replace.

So have you decided on one to get yet or are you still just looking at your options?

My boss just got a 20% off offer from Dell so I'm leaning towards it. Also HP makes great ones with up to 7 hours of battery life.
I want 2G of ram and a dual core preferably closer to 2Ghz than 1... Also check this out! An Entrepreneur’s Trilogy » Blog Archive » Smallest Laptop Computer Cool or what? I'd have it hooked up to a normal "natural" keyboard and 21" monitor but it could fit anywhere. Very cool. YouTube - Asus Eee PC 701 unboxed My sister's last DELL LCD died at ~1.5 years... No warranty nothing now she has a mac and loves it. I'm too attached to PC's though.
