Default Homeless and Traveling the World

Hey,

I just joined the forum here.

My name is Gary. I've been traveling around the world since March 2007. I have been to 34 countries and territories since I've started my trip and I'm currently writing this outside of Sydney, Australia.

I've blogged from some of the most remote places possible, including Easter Island and the Marshall Islands (where I had to walk to the satellite uplink station to do a blog post).

You can check out my site from the link in my sig.

I really like this blog and my plan in life was to work for a few years get some money and experience then do what you're doing.

Obviously I realized as time got going that if I was going to do this I needed a strong income or savings before I went. Being in my mid wow late 20's now I'm getting there but it's funny how life creeps up on you making it more difficult to leave. I decided that burning a nest egg is a bad idea as well not everyone even gets a nest egg in life and if you have one you have to make sure you don't lose it.

That being said when I do become self sufficient online I'd feel much better doing this with a nest egg as backup but not something you are dipping into.

What you're doing is kinda like the whole PT thing of permanent tourist, perpetual traveler and I find it very appealing. Having a short attention span and a thirst for adventure nothing seems more interesting then making your way through the world at your own pace and on your own terms.

Are you planning on seeing every country in the free world and does this trip have a start or an end? I just started reading your blog so pardon if I don't know this yet but for living accommodations are you just staying in hotels?

Also has the trip been about what you predicted or cheaper or more expensive then planned?

That's all the questions for now and welcome to the community!

I'm in my late 30s. I had an internet company I sold back in the 90s, so I'm not that hard up for cash.

I did the most expensive part of the trip first, in the Pacific. Everywhere you go you have to travel via airplane. I'm in Australia now which is very expensive because of the exchange rate with the US dollar. (normal bottle of coke is AUD$3.50 here. US$0.93 = AUD$1)

I'm hesitant to go to Europe anytime soon because of the exchange rate.

I have no set end to the trip. I'm going to see where blogging goes. I'm just trying to build an audience now, not focusing on trying to make money. I see no point in running a ton of ads if you have no readers. I'm also starting a video podcast shortly.

I've only started promoting my site back in December. Until then, it was pretty stagnant and only friends and family reading it.

Blogging on the road is difficult, but so far I'm managing.

Very cool.

I'm assuming this is a solo mission? Also if you're going to do a podcast why not do a video blog? (if you have the equipment) you can buy cheap good HD video cameras / digital cameras from Canon. I bought one at Xmas and it's tiny as well. (Canon PowerShot TX1: Digital Photography Review)

Looking forward to continuing to read your adventures. I've been to Centra America a few times and I think you'd enjoy it. Very cheap living and Panama in particular has great connectivity, drinking water etc. If you're ever making it there let me know I'll send you some must see places.

Time to vicariously live through you on your blog!

Actually, it is going to be a video podcast.

I have a Sanyo Exati HD1000. It doesn't use tape so the workflow should be much easier. I had a nice HD camera earlier in my trip, but trying to do editing with tape with nothing but a laptop was too much of a pain.
