Start a Thread? Join the MINORITY!?

Hi everyone,

Hope you had an amazing weekend. It's Monday morning and I had a thought...

Recently when I was at a Social Media Breakfast; there was a panel on "Online Communities" one of the slides pointed out how ~5-10% of visitors will ever become actively engaged in a community. Of those even an infinitely smaller group will ever start a new topic of discussion.

Turns out most people just want information. They may occasionally throw in their $0.02 if a topic is there. They will come to forum; look for info than leave. That or they will come to forum look for info see what's "there" throw in a comment if they feel like it then leave.

Truth is; starting threads is the CORE of any forum. If there were NO threads no one would ever reply. No one would sign up etc etc...

I'm asking you to make this week different. Whether it's here at Bloggeries on some other forum you enjoy visiting try and start atleast 2-3 threads a week. That is not a lot. It can be about anything. (Lounge, News, Basics, Marketing, Make Money, Vlogging whatever...) By doing this you're adding to the growth of the community you enjoy. A simple thing like starting a thread can set of a big chain reaction of activity which often leads to further threads created and definitely most posts made.

Choose to be different and be one of the people who help make communities work. You'll meet many new people this way and of course increase exposure on the forum. Anytime someone visits a thread they always read / scan the first one no matter what they do with the others.

I'm rambling as I often do. Big thanks to those who have and do start threads here. If you've never done it or don't do it often try it either here or somewhere else. You and the community you're a part of will be glad you did. It's what makes things interesting. Sine we're all so unique and see things differently threads from different perspectives are helpful to all involved.

I've started a few threads here. Mainly about comparing blog statistics, but not a lot.

I'll do my best! I think I've started several threads here in the past, at least 2 or 3 in the past week, but I promise I'll dig around for something interesting to share with the group.

In some communities, I'm definitely one of the top thread starters. I enjoy sparking new conversation and getting people to start talking. Here, when I start a new thread, it tends to be blog news related because I read quite a bit of blogging news and want to share, more than anything, for those who don't keep up with the news.

Yeah, I've been in two forums where I was in the top ten topic starters, but here I don't have as much news or topics relating to blogging. I'll have to search some out.

Well, I started a couple of threads after reading this ... and was not as scary as I thought! I could even say that I've enjoyed watching the threads unfold (if you'll excuse the pun!).

So I add my encouragement to anyone who needs a little gentle push to start a thread. Ian

After several false starts I'm getting more comfortable with the blogging experience. I sometimes question my motives for such pursuits because I have a tendency to become consumed by them. Are any of you readers the same way? Why do we do it?

That is definitely the spirit! I like starting threads because I have lots of questions and I love to hear what people have to say.
