I think comments are not a good measure of traffic or readership.

I have about 300 RSS readers and another 300-500 visitors per day. MAYBE 1% will comment and they tend to be the same ones.

Commenters tend to be the top of the reader pyramid. They usually only comments after they've been reading a while. 99% your and every site are lurkers. I never comment on most sites I stumble, even if I like it. Usually I have nothing to say. At best I will hit the RSS button then move on.

The goal is to get exposed to as many people as possible, and hope that a small percentage will come back. Rinse and repeat. Once that regular traffic grows, you will get more commenters. The rate of increasing comments will grow much slower than almost any other metric.

I DO agree that SU is a great source of traffic. However, what's the bounce rate you get from SU? How many comments have you got from SU?

On my site, Entrecard generates a higher bounce rate than SU, but not by much. However, Entrecard generates a lot more comments (hundreds), whereas SU has generated maybe two or three, tops.

SU is good, but how many of those people actually interact with your site?
For me, SU is in the 50's-60's for the bounce rate and Entrecard is over 90%... and you can even see a screenshot on my post If You Didn’t have Entrecard, Your Blog Would Have No Visitors | Blogging Tips & Custom Banner Designs at DatMoney.com :icon_twisted:

Not through ads purchased but through my actual card I get decent traffic with currently no effort and it's a 58% bounce rate. The thread below has a screenshot and better explains it.

Just so everyone know, I'm doing an experiment with Entrecard so I'm one of the chain droppers now.

I see some bumps in my Alexa Traffic Rank. I'm also targeting webmaster forums and the result is promising. I'll post about my experiment soon. Watch out for it.

I chain drop 300 a day and have been doing it for the past week or two. I can do it in about 20 minutes, so its not that much time. I try to visit different blogs instead of always dropping on the same ones. Even though I chain drop, I'm a fast enough reader that I can usually read a post on a blog before I leave. If I find the blog interesting, then I stick around a little longer. So to me, chain dropping isn't a bad thing. For one, you are basically earning credits for the other bloggers when you drop your card on their blog. If they have a post that catches your attention then you might become a regular reader of their blog. Finally, when they reciprocate your drop, they can check out your blog and could potentially become a regular reader.
