The problem is after a bit depending on how popular your blog is or what niche it represents spam bots will have you deleting dozens of posts a day. In my opinion it is so easy to install Askimet, actually it is preinstalled in Wordpress. You just have to create an account and get a code and all your moderation time can then be left for the real comments left by people. I'm sorry I did not set it up sooner.

I always moderate comments i once had this spammer that was constantly trying to get a blatant spam comment posted he or she must have submitted it something ridiculous like 30 times in the space of a week i was beginning to think they would never give up.

Askimet really is a good solution, however i rarely turn it on in the first 12 months...the reason???
I welcome comment spam!!! I do not however allow it to be published as it is posted, I simply set all moderation and then change the comments to induce a comment conversation (basically I talk to myself).

Very useful article about how to prevent this happen. For me, there is a option in WordPress Discussion Options SubPanel offers a Comment Blacklist filter. Otherwise, I think is to force your users to register with your blog before they can leave comments there.
