Very nicely written, Uni Kid. Thanks for pointing it out, Rob.

I found some excellent sources there. Thank you. I'm totally new to the blogging world and feel like a fish out of water frankly.

I'm an over fifty (can it be true???) woman with a lot of time on her hands and children that are moving on. I decided to pursue my passion of writing and assault the internet with my blog.

It seems to me that the bloggosphere is full of witty, edgy, 20'somethings.....but I think us 50' somethings need to carve out our own spot.

That will be my job.

This is a great site with some amazing insight.

The only point I do not fully agree with is the domain. I use Blogger and the name is longer but all of the tools are there. Why would I want to create a domain, find a host, and build a new blog? Are there any great advantages?

Hi Tropper,

This has been discussed before but the main reason is you don't own your content on blogger.com it can get deleted or your account banned anything an you've lost your work. Wordpress on self hosted is easy, cheap and you own your content. Also WP has thousands of free themes tones of widgets it's just the way to do it if you're serious 100%. I'm hosted with HostGator right now and I've never had to contact tech support as long as I've had an account. You can register a domain at GoDaddy; I've been using them forever as well.

Also your domain can be whatever you want and if you're smart you'll make it have some search terms in it while still being somewhat pleasant to look at. There is also other discussions on that or start a new thread on the topic.

I started at blogger long long ago like so many others and you do get comfortable but you never miss things when you move up and it's even more comfortable. There are other threads as well if you search on how to make the transfer; many members here have done it.

Hope this helps,

Thumbs up Well done Uni..Kid

Nice work, this is a great help for the newbie.

Blogging is a whole new world when your new at it, its like being a fish out of water. You have helped make it a lot easier for the newbie blogger to start and over come the fear factor.

Having your own blog is a must for all the reasons just mentioned, but its a good idea to get over the learning curve on a free blog. Once you get the blogging bug you can move your blog over to your own web site.

Thanks for the tips
John

For me, time is money.

If someone can afford a computer, there is a decent chance that they will be able to afford the $10 startup required for a domain ($7.15 @ GoDaddy) and hosting (available for less than $3/month with low specs, but enough for a small blog.

As you expand, you have invest out of what you make - however, working on Blogger for two months and then realising that you've gotten so popular you need to move is an insane waste of the two months as you'll have to start off from scratch on a fresh domain - no PR, no links, nothing. Also, typically you won't be able to sell a Blogspot blog for much as you don't own it.
