This is all very well, but it seems like the real trick is to get the first couple of dozen subscribers. All of these stat designs seem aimed at promoting what's already working, but it's still really hard to find the quality stuff that isn't famous yet. Isn't the internet supposed to be good for that?

I see what you are saying but in the beginning it's also important to know what is working what isn't. If you did 5 things and got 50 visitors you'd like to know which one brought the visitors. Hypothetically it could of been all from one source where the other 4 were totally useless.

Also like most businesses your blog's toughest time is th first while. Sink or swim type thing. Once you start going it becomes easier though.
