You're right egos can hurt a blogger. Too many people focus on taking and not enough giving.

I am pleased that you've outlined this. In my experience a lot of bloggers are takers.

Monkeyman09 to answer your first question, I think 250 words is a great length for an average post - this is the optimal minimum for good SEO, as well as being a good chunk of information without overloading. I think posts that go over 500 words are great too, but be sure to spread them out with shorter, punchier content.

This is exactly what I do. I usually write book reviews that are about 300 words in length. Interspersed with these are major foundation articles: my critical analysis papers on various classic books.

This allows me to balance popular articles with frequent articles. Some people go for longer articles, other's for the shorter reviews. In this way I'm able to attract a variety of visitors.

This technique seems to work well for my SEO.
