Watch Your WP Permalink Structure During Upgrades

I just did an upgrade to the latest version of Wordpress using the auto update feature on Godaddy. I just noticed that it changed the permalink structure of my blog back to the default and I had created a few new posts that would certainly not have been as effective with a number and not a keyword specific link.

Here's a screenshot of where I want mine to be and not the default.

So a word to the wise, if you update Wordpress to a later version make sure you go back and check your permalink structure to make sure it is set to what you want it to be.

Really? That's odd, it's never happened to me on any blog before. Maybe because I do it manually and I don't do auto update. But you never know. I'm definitely going to check though.

Yeah you definitely don't want the default setting if just because it makes for bad SEO to. I helps if the url has keywords in it to, which is why I always use month, day, and post name.

I just realized something else about permalinks, when I noticed mine had changed a few weeks ago I modified mine to a different structure than I originally had it set to.

I noticed in Statcounter that people were being dropped to my home page and not my posts because it was not at that same exact url any more. I was loosing sales because of it. I installed a 301 redirect plugin and that solved all of those problems in about a minute.

Wow, that is a big problem - never seen it before on any of my WP blogs, but I'll be watching now - especially with 2.7 coming out.

I've never had that problem with the automatic upgrade with the automatic plugin through the wp console.

I've been using WordPress for about 5-6 years now. In my case, I also do my upgrades manually and I've yet to encounter this problem.

I think the problem is with GoDaddy's auto upgrader. It would be best to do the WordPress installation upgrade manually or using the auto-upgrade plugin.
