Useful to keep in mind. My blog has its options set to only allow automatic comments from users who already have an approved comment. All other comments must waitto be approved by me before appearing. I imaging that it wouldn't be as easy for some busier sites, but I like reading all my comments.

moderation is the easiest/best method. I never tried achismet plugin though, people say its pretty good.

Askimet catches almost everything. It's so strong that sometimes NON spam get labeled spam so it's good to check through once and a while.

I have askimet on one blog and not on another... The one that doesn't gets ~20 spam comments a day! Trust me; try out askimet

I haven't tried akismet but I approve all comments before they appear.

That works until you start getting spammed!

You'll know when you need to make the change.

what are your thoughts on Sabre? If someone is using askimet do you think it's worth doubling up?

I think so - it reduces the registrations by bots. If nothing else, it saves server space and reduces server load a little when you have bot after bot registering.
