Askimet is only good if you get too much traffic and can't handle it, if you get limited traffic then you don't want to remove some of the comments which may not be spam.

Good post about comment spam and Akismet over at Life In The Country. Daily WordPress Tasks. I think Akismet is a must unless you want to moderate every comment in perpetuity. I don't think permanent moderation of regular readers is very welcoming.

Some of the spam comments I've got recently almost look like real posts, in that they read well and sound like a question until you get to the very end.

My registered commenters can post freely. It's just unregistered/1st comments that are moded.

Akismet is pretty good and effective, but you have to watch out when it thinks you're a spammer though. Suddenly there's a lot of WP blogs you won't be commenting on. I think my domain had been previously owned by someone who was A Bad Person, because I started out blocked, it seems. However, once I figured out what the problem was, I got pretty quick and effective response from both Matt Mullenweg and WordPress.com support, so I can't really complain. That they have got a useful and responsive support tail makes a pretty big difference to me. I'd been a big fan of Akismet, then pretty bummed out by it, and had my faith restored in just a few days.

I usually get spam messages on my blogs when I join lots of different forums..
that's the time I started to moderate the comments on my blogs..

Why not just erase the spam articles. It is much easier.

Right now I'm running a few websites and a blog using Drupal. I used to allow any comments but had to approve them before they would be published...I had to go through tens of comments per day that were spam and delete them.

I ended up installing the CAPTCHA drupal module which adds an image where you enter in the letters the image is displaying. You can control the distortion and such for the image displayed. All in all, its been a really great module to install, has brought my comment spam down to zero.

Have you tried one of those that just asks a basic common sense yes or no question that should fool a bot? Such as: Is fire hot or cold?
